Training Films Added at http://www.refugeelegalaidinformation.org/content/films

Earlier this year, Shari Robertson and Michael Camerini, who produced the films, ‘Well-Founded Fear of Persecution,’ have given permission for two of their films to be shared on www.refugeelegalaidinformation.org: Well-Founded Fear and Practicing Refugee Law. These two films provide excellent training and we strongly recommend that they be used to train legal aid providers, interpreters, and judges as well as for raising awareness of the plight of asylum seekers. We ask anyone not from an NGO in the South or lacking the funding to do so, should go to their web site http://www.epidavros.org/ss/products and purchase the films. As they put it: ‘Yes, we are still selling all three on our web site, but we'd love to help. Is there some way for you to filter for decidedly first world down loaders? Would hate to see too many American Universities downloading for free - they can afford a little support for filmmakers! By the way, our post Well-Founded Fear project, an endless one, is here: Twelve Stories: How Democracy Works Now | Home.’

Human Rights Watch (2012): United Kingdom: Halt Deportation Flight to Sri Lanka. Urgently review Tamil Allegations of Torture

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has published a document on the situation of rejected asylum seekers in Sri Lanka. The document gives an account of Ethnic Tamils being subjected to arbitrary arrest, torture and other ill-treatment by local authorities after their arrival in Sri Lanka. Having submitted the document to the UK Immigration minister HRW urges the UK government to impose a moratorium on returns, to review relevant UK policies and to introduce new risk assessment guidelines. Although the UK Border Agency acknowledges reports of torture being a widespread practice in Sri Lanka, a blind eye is turned to evidence that Tamils deported to Sri Lanka risk torture on arrival, according to HRW.

Fundación Comisión Católica Argentina de Migraciones

For more than thirty years FCCAM implements assistance plans developed by UNHCR. FCCAM Works within four areas in cooperation with other civil society organizations and UNHCR.

1. FCCAM provides within its Social Area access to the study of Spanish courses, to the Health Service, employment skills training and a clothes bank as well as other projects.

2. Within the Legal Area of work FCCAM provides assistance with regards to the asylum seeking process in Argentina, its stages, consequences and the rights and obligations that asylum seekers and refugees have. FCCAM also provides advice in areas such as accessing education, work or housing due to lack of documentation. We also assist those that need help with family reunification or voluntary repatriation. Though FCCAM does not provide legal representation in court, it will help to refer cases and provide assistance together with other governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

3. Mental Health: We provide individual interviews for refugees and asylum seekers in order to detect mental health issues with the aim to work towards supporting individuals in such issues.

4. Housing: FCCAM searches for alternatives that combine existing resources and allow to provide housing solutions at a national and local level.
